Strong broncho-dilator, expectorant, and stimulant with an ancient history of use in China. Extracts are used in bronchial decongestants and asthma medicines. It speeds up the heartbeat and so should be used with caution. Contains the alkaloids ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, and norephedrine among others. Native to West central China, Southern Siberia, and Japan. Extremely rare in this country.
