In warm climates this will grow to a 40' tree; in the north it must be grown as a tub plant. This plant is the source of the bay leaves used in cooking as well as of the laurel crowns traditionally awarded to athletic victors. Wonderful for topiary. The leaves are essential to the well-stocked kitchen and are best when fresh. Besides their culinary use, Bay leaves are astringent and can be boiled and used to treat Poison Ivy. The essential oil is used to treat arthritis, rheumatism, earaches and high blood pressure. Grows quickly after the first couple of years - keep it on the dry side over the winter in moderate to bright light. We leave our Bay Trees outside through the first few frosts of fall before we bring them into the greenhouse for the winter. This doesn't hurt them - they are hardy down through the mid to lower 20's. This will put them into a semi-dormant state of rest which they will appreciate. They actually prefer a cool winter season - don't give them the brightest warmest location in your house. These are in 4" pots.
