Early Spring flower (April-June) with loose clusters of 1" rose-purple to lilac-pink flowers. The root is high in tannin thus highly astringent. It has been used to treat diarrhea, bleeding, canker sores, toothache and as a eyewash. Prefers moist soil and partial shade; one of the easiest native wildflowers to naturalize.
