The thistle of the Stuarts and the national emblem of Scotland. This is a very striking and intimidating plant. The whole plant is covered with white cottony down as well as with numerous stiff spines - the botanical name means "thorny donkey food". Misbehaving children were sent to collect the down to stuff pillows. The seeds contain 25% oil which has been used for cooking as well as lamp fuel. The stems can be eaten like aparagus after removing the outer rind. It will self-sow; however it has not become a problem for us. Used in the past to treat cancers, ulcers, rickets, and nervous complaints. Prefers a dry sunny location.
