Showy, naturalized(some say invasive), yellow flowered Iris from Europe. The rhizomes of this have been used to treat toothaches, coughs, diarrhea and bruises. Strong purgative action. Flowers yield a yellow dye, rhizomes yield blue and black. It prefers wet areas(it will grow in water up to 10" deep) and acidic soils but adapts well to ordinary garden soils with some partial shade. Deadhead it to keep seeds from spreading.
