A decorative native woodland plant. The stem and leaves have a blue/gray cast. Inconspicuous flowers are followed by small blue seed-bearing fruits. The roots have been used for their properties as a demulcent, anti-spasmodic, emmenogogue, and diuretic. It is used for stimulating the uterus and starting labor; starting menstruation; stopping muscle spasms; as a laxative; and for treating colic, sore throat, and cramps. This is a powerful abortifacient and should be used with caution, if at all.
