The one and a half inch wide white flowers appear in early spring on stalks clasped by leaves before they unfurl. The seven inch palmate leaves have five to seven lobes each. The thick, fleshy rootstock yields a red juice used as a dye. The root has been used as an emetic, cathartic, and expectorant. Seeds are dispersed by ants.
