The cylindrical flowers are white to yellow-green and dangle in pairs from the leaf axils on gracefully arching stalks. The roots are anti-inflammatory, astringent, diuretic, and tonic. The starch-rich roots have been eaten in breads and soups. Blue-black berries leaves and stems are said to be toxic. For the shade garden - it prefers a loose rich soil. Easily divided after a year or two.
