This relative of common Coleus has downy 3" long broad thick fleshy leaves with a strong oregano/eucalyptus-like fragrance. Long trailing spikes of pale purple flowers make it a good hanging basket plant. Used in Caribbean cooking as well as in other parts of the world. The volatile oils from this and the other two Coleus oreganos listed have demonstrated strong antibacterial fungicidal and antithelminthic activity and have been used to protect stored grain. Prescribed in Ayurvedic medicine for bronchitis, asthma, and inflammations. In India the leaves are used to flavor wine and beer. Tolerates neglect. Also known as Indian Borage.
