Fast-growing attractive ground cover for areas with mild winters. Hardy to 30 degrees F. The leaves have a curious and amazingly sweet flavor due to hernandulcin - a compound named for the Spanish physician who first described the plant to Europeans. It is said to be more than 1000 times sweeter than sugar. Up to 53% of the plant's essential oil is camphor so ingestion of the leaves is not recommended in any significant quantity. An attractive curiosity. Excellent in hanging baskets - the leaves turn red when temps drop below 50 degrees F.
