Originally acquired as a perennial native edible cucumber, we find this is more like a reseeding annual here in SE Ohio. Native from Pennsylvania to Nebraska, and Florida to Texas it has the potential to become quite weedy. We let it reseed and pull out any where it's not welcome. A fast growing vine with the aspect of a cucumber plant, the fruits are 1/2 to 3/4 inch long and taste just like cucumbers when green and unripe. When the fruits ripen they turn black, taste awful, and are said to be a strong laxative. I can only speak to eating dozens of the green, delicious fruits every year - with no ill effects. Packet - $3.50
