Source of chia seeds. Used by the indigenous peoples of the SW U.S., Central and South America to increase endurance on long journeys. The seeds contain a high amount of protein and are extensively utilized as flour meal and in making beverages. Thick, glurp mucilaginous beverages. Try it! Seeds are up to 55% oil which contains omega-3 fatty acids and a-linolenic acid. They contain anti-oxidants, amino acids and a long list of vitamins and minerals. This may have been as important a food crop as maize was to the Aztecs until it was banned by their Spanish conquerors. In 2008 Australia was the world's largest producer of the seed. Hopefully it wasn't all for Chia Pets. Packet(Standard): $3.50; 1/8 oz: $4.50; 1/4 oz: $8.50; 1/2 oz: $16.00; 1 oz: $30.00 - 31,000 seeds/oz
