The compound leaves of this plant have the curious scent of burning rubber. This, along with Glycyrrhiza glabra, are held in almost as high esteem as Ginseng is by the Chinese. Both varieties are held to be tonic, alexipharmic, alternative, rejuvenative, and expectorant. The Russian Licorice is very vigorous and hardy here - possibly to zone 4.
