Chinese medicinal; the roots are used for their anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic and anodyne properties, the new shoots are edible and the leaves, roots and stems have been used to treat malaria, fevers, toothache and urinary tract problems. Seeds can be used in place of cereal grains. The common name refers to the way the joints of the plant resemble ox knees.
