Large common multi-branched perennial often found in disturbed ground and waste areas; easily recognized by the clusters of purple-black berries from mid-summer on. The berries give a strong red dye that has been used to color confections and wines. Toxic in large doses, the root of this plant has a long history of use in treating rheumatism, arthritis, tumors, respiratory tract ailments and as a pain reliever. It also has strong antiviral properties.
