Also known as Persicaria tinctoria, Japanese Indigo and Chinese Indigo. Similar in appearance to its cousins the common Smartweeds and Knotweeds. Not invasive like them, it is easy to grow from seed in average garden soil. The compound "indican" which yields an indigo dye is present in the leaves. Leaves are used to treat skin inflammations.
