A coarse, branching plant with large toothed leaves and showy white and violet trumpet shaped flowers; seeds are in spiny pods. Leaves have been smoked to relieve respiratory complaints. All the Daturas contain similar alkaloids (hyoscyamine, atropine, and scopalamine, among others) and have been used for similar purposes where indigenous. It has been demonstrated that Daturas pull heavy metals from the soil, and the government has done some experimental plantings of Datura in an effort to de-contaminate soils contaminated with uranium and plutonium.
