Native to China, this member of the Aroid family sprouts large arrowhead shaped leaves up to a foot or more long. The flower resembles in shape the Jack in the Pulpit flower but much larger, more colorful, and with a frilly hood. And it stinks! Grow in moist rich soil in sun to part shade in containers or in the ground. We used to recommend digging the tubers if planted in the ground but we've had them growing in our beds for 8 - 10 years outside(and flowering). If you must dig them, store dry and cool. The dried and processed tubers are widely used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat cancers, tumors and migraines. It is considered anticancer, antispasmodic, analgesic, carminative, detoxicant and expectorant. Shipped in 4" pots year round; September - March you'll receive a 4" pot with several dormant tubers in it.
