Easy, fast-growing showy deciduous shrub with masses of light-to-dark lilac-colored flowers and aromatic palmate leaves. Prefers well-drained soil. The seeds, ground like pepper, have been used for the purpose of reducing sexual desire (mainly monks) due to a hormone-like substance they contain. Studies have shown that the seeds stimulate progesterone production and they have been used to regulate periods, treat PMS, and ease menopausal symptoms. Recently used to treat Cushings disease in horses with good results. Native to W. Asia, Europe. Hardy for us although prone to some top kill in severe winters.
