Native woodland plant with large heart-shaped leaves and urn-shaped brownish flowers which bloom in early spring. Slug pollinated! Indigenous peoples used the root tea for indigestion, cramps, colds, coughs, "female complaints", and a host of other ailments. The root was used like Ginger (Zingiber officinale) by early settlers but is distinctive in aroma and milder in action. Antibiotic properties. Good shade ground cover.
