Native to North America east of the Rocky Mountains. While the leaves roots, stems and unripe berries are toxic enough they have been used as insecticides, the flowers and ripe berries are edible and have been used for centuries medicinally as jams, jellies, wines and syrups - cooked with the seeds strained out.
