While this species doesn't produce large edible tubers like some in this genus, the steroid-like properties of diosgenin found in the woody roots of this plant have given it a widely respected reputation. It has been used in the treatment of colic, rheumatism, arthritis, nausea, asthma, and a host of other ailments. It prefers a rich damp woodland soil in partial shade.
