A common "weed" of most temperate climates, this plant is a very showy little thing if grown in a bed of average garden soil. Several outstanding horticultural varieties have been selected out for the perennial trade. As its name indicates it has been widely employed but little scientific research has been done as to its actual physical effects. Used as an astringent, styptic, tonic and for weaknesses of the heart and liver. The leaves are edible and used in soups, stews, and salads.
