SE Asian plant with a long tradition of use in treating dysentery, measles, swellings, snake bite, indigestion, colds, and skin diseases. It's antiviral and antibacterial. The flavor of the green leaves is reminiscent of Cilantro, lime and fish - sometimes referred to as Fishwort. It is commonly used in soups and meat dishes. Can be eaten raw, cooked or made into tea. Vap Ca leaves, stems, vinegar and chilies are a Guizhou specialty. Prefers moist, rich soil in partial shade where it can be invasive. Good ground cover as it spreads rapidly via underground runners. The roots are eaten in China as a root vegetable.
