Called King of the Bitters for good reason! The entire plant is incredibly bitter. Therefore, it is used in bitters formulas by herbalists. The plant grows as an erect herb to a height of 1-3 feet in moist, shady places where native (India, Sri Lanka). The leaves and stems are shiny and dark green. The small flowers are pink, solitary, arranged in lax spreading racemes or panicles. Andrographis is one of the most popular medicinal plants used traditionally for the treatment of an array of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, ulcer, leprosy, bronchitis, skin diseases, flatulence, colic, influenza, dysentery, dyspepsia and malaria for centuries in Asia, America and Africa continents. It flowers August to November for us. This is an excellent terrarium plant. Also an easy houseplant as it tolerates some shade.
