Thrives in deep moist loam. Native to damp meadows and river banks of N. Europe and Asia. It has been used as a potherb but its main commercial uses have been the making of candy from the stems and using the root to flavor cigarette tobacco. Aromatic, stimulant and carminative; it stimulates the appetite, digestive secretions and peristalsis. Also an effective expectorant. Stinging nettles planted nearby will increase the oil content.
