Native from Quebec to Minnesota south to Texas and Florida, this relative of the Jack in the Pulpit grows in rich, loose well-drained soil generally in woods and along stream banks. It puts up one leaf stalk with 5 to 15 leaflets held horizontally in a quasi-circular or palmate shape. The flower is similar to the Jack in the Pulpit but not as colorful and with a much longer spadix. It is followed by a "club" of red berries. The root was carried in sacred bundles of the Menominee to encourage second sight in dreams.
