Commonly used by some North American Indian tribes and lay herbal doctors for its properties as a febrifuge, laxative, stimulant, and diaphoretic. Listed in the U. S. Pharmacopeia; the leaves and flowers are the parts used. The opposite leaves are joined at the base making it appear as though the stem is growing through them. Attractive to butterflies and bees. Likes moisture.
