The root of this plant has been used to treat hepatitis, syphilis, venereal warts, and some forms of cancer but is quite toxic. The "apple" ripens in August and is edible, although groundhogs usually reap the harvest. The plant spreads from root stocks and makes an attractive and unusual planting. The leaves are large palmate and glossy. Native of our clearings and woods edges.
