Thrives in deep, moist loam. Native to damp meadows and river banks of N. Europe and Asia. It has been used as a potherb, but its main commercial uses have been the making of candy from the stems, and using the root to flavor cigarette tobacco. Aromatic, stimulant, and carminative; it stimulates the appetite, digestive secretions, and peristalsis. Large, attractive plant.
