A New World source of indigo dye, which is derived by steeping or fermenting the leaves. The active property (indican) is at its height just before the plant flowers. Widely grown throughout the Southern US in the past. Commonly grown throughout Central and N. South America. A nitrogen-fixing legume which thrives in hot weather and fertile soil.
