The large, edible tuberous roots are cultivated in East Asia and called Chinese Yams. Small bulblets grow along the length of the vine with ornamental shiny ovate leaves. The tiny flowers smell like cinnamon. Used in China as a tonic for the kidneys and lungs. Contains a diosgenin precursor to progesterone. A very important and little-credited medicinal plant.
